Hur identifierar hunden olika sjukdomar?

Cancer orsakar förändringar i kroppens ämnesomsättning. Dessa förändringar leder till produktion av avvikande metaboliter eller en ökning av dem som utsöndras genom blodcirkulationen, utandningsluften, huden och sekret. Användningen av hundar för att identifiera sjukdomar grundar sig på hundens förmåga att lukta till sig dessa förändringar.

Diagnostikhundarna utbildas för att identifiera luktprofilen av cancer. Utbildningen går ut på identifiering av urinprov från patienter med prostata- eller bröstcancer. Enligt studier kan hundar identifiera även många andra cancertyper, även om de i utbildningen bara tränats för att identifiera en.

Diagnostikhundar är en värdefull resurs för hälso- och sjukvården, vid cancersållning och i utvecklandet av ny teknologi. Hundar kan utbildas till att upptäcka många olika slags sjukdomar.

Forskning stöder användningen av diagnostikhundar

Forskning visar att hundar kan identifiera luktprofilen av cancer. Hundtränaren ska vara utbildad för att kunna läsa sin hund och tolka dess signaler när den arbetar.
